Landscapes for the People

Landscapes for the People, shares the story of George Alexander Grant, first staff, and later first chief, photographer of the National Park Service. During his 25 year career (1922, 1929-54), Grant traveled over 140,000 miles and produced more than 30,000 images for the Park Service. Millions of people saw his photographs in magazines, newspaper articles, museum exhibits, and park materials, but few outside the agency ever knew his name as nearly all of his photographs were credited, simply, "National Park Service". This oversize book is the culmination of three years of research and scanning of hundreds of Grant's photographs in the National Park Service Historic Photographic Collection in Charles Town, WV; in the Western Archeological Conservation Center in Tucson, AZ; and from historic photographs provided by George Grant's three nieces, his closest living relatives. The book, released y the University of Georgia Press in September 2015, includes a biography of Grant and more than 170 of his iconic black-and-white photographs.
