Yellowstone National Park

George Grant began his Park Service career as a seasonal ranger in Yellowstone in the summer of 1922, and it was there that he first took up photography. He resigned a permanent ranger position that fall to pursue photography with hope of returning to the Park Service in that capacity. Such a position was not created until 1929 when Grant was employed as the first NPS staff photographer. He was promoted to Chief Photographer in 1931. He returned to Yellowstone to photograph in 1931, 1933, 1939 and 1941.
