Fort Union National Monument

Ruins of military fort on Santa Fe Trail in New Mexico about 80 miles from Santa Fe. Fort operated from 1851 to 1891 and was the larges military complex in the Southwest. Served as a distribution center for military forts in New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona and west Texas. Closed in 1891 after the trail was no longer the principal route due to the railroads.
