Petersburg National Battlefield Park
This National Battlefield Park preserves the site of the 1865 siege of Petersburg, the Battle of the Crater, and the City Point where Gen. Ulysses Grant maintained his headquarters and where President Abraham Lincoln visited after Petersburg fell to the Union Army. After Gen. Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army of Northern Virginia abandoned Petersburg, the Confederate Capital of Richmond was soon captured. Not long afterwards, Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865.
